Vinyl Binder Material: Construction, Options & Durability

Vinyl is the workhorse of custom binders — economical, durable, wipeable, and available in dozens of colors. Here's how vinyl binders are constructed and how to spec one.

How a vinyl binder is built

A vinyl binder starts with rigid chipboard cores for the front cover, spine, and back cover. The boards are sandwiched between two sheets of vinyl, which are heat-sealed (RF-welded) around all edges and between the panels to create the hinges. The result is a fully sealed, moisture-resistant case.

Vinyl gauge

Vinyl thickness is measured in gauge. Standard covers use a lighter gauge over the boards; heavy-use binders can be upgraded to heavier gauge for extra tear resistance at the hinges. If binders will live in shops, kitchens, or field trucks, ask for heavier gauge.

Color and finish options

• Solid colors — dozens of standard vinyl colors; large orders can be color-matched
• Clear overlay (entrapment) — a clear vinyl layer over the cover that lets you insert printed sheets, or permanently seal printed material inside — see entrapment binders
• Decorating — vinyl accepts screen printing, foil stamping, and applique/debossing

Why choose vinyl

• Wipes clean — good for food service, medical, shop-floor environments
• Sealed edges resist moisture and wear
• Fast production for large quantities

When to choose something else

If you want a premium, book-like feel with edge-to-edge printed graphics, look at turned edge binders or litho wrap. For a lighter, flexible, tear-proof binder, consider poly.
