Turned Edge Binder Materials & Construction

Turned edge — also called casemade — is the same construction used for hardcover books. It's the premium end of custom binders: crisp corners, edge-to-edge graphics, and a rigid, permanent feel.

How turned edge construction works

A turned edge binder starts with a printed sheet, laminated for protection, that is wrapped ("turned") around rigid binder's board and glued, with the edges folded to the inside. A liner sheet covers the turned edges inside the cover. This is exactly how hardcover book cases are made.

Cover material choices

• Printed & laminated paper — full-color litho or digital printing with gloss or matte lamination; the most common choice
• Book cloth / fabrics — linen and specialty cloths for an understated, executive feel, usually paired with foil stamping
• Leather & synthetic leathers — for awards, menus, and executive presentation pieces

Lamination options

Gloss lamination makes colors pop and wipes clean. Matte lamination gives a soft, modern feel but can show scuffs on dark solids — ask about scuff-resistant matte films for dark covers. Soft-touch films add a velvety texture for premium projects.

Cost and lead time

Turned edge is a multi-step construction (print, laminate, wrap, line) and costs more than vinyl with somewhat longer lead times. For full-color graphics at a lower price point, consider litho wrap.
