Foil Stamping on Binders & Folders

Foil stamping presses a thin metallic or pigment film into the cover with a heated die. It's the classic mark of a premium piece — crisp, reflective, and impossible to reproduce with ink alone.

How it works

A custom metal die of your logo or text is heated and pressed against foil film into the cover material. The heat and pressure transfer the foil and leave a subtle impression — you can feel a quality foil stamp as well as see it.

Foil options

• Metallic foils — gold, silver, copper, and metallic colors; the signature executive look
• Pigment foils — opaque matte or gloss colors; useful for printing light colors on dark covers where ink would need multiple hits
• Holographic / specialty foils — patterns and iridescents for high-impact covers

Best materials for foil

Foil performs beautifully on vinyl, cloth and leather turned edge covers, and paper folders. Textured materials give a slightly softer edge; smooth materials give razor-crisp detail.

Artwork requirements

Foil dies reproduce solid shapes and line work — not photographs or gradients. Keep line weights above about 0.5 pt and avoid very fine serif detail at small sizes. Vector art (AI, EPS, PDF) is required for die making.

What drives cost

1. Die size — dies are priced by square inch; a spine stamp plus front stamp means two dies (or two hits)
2. Number of foil colors — each color is a separate press pass
3. Quantity — the die is a one-time cost, so unit price drops fast with volume; reorders reuse your die
